Foreword

Dr Sun Yat-sen was an honourable national hero, patriot and forerunner of democratic revolution in China. Dr Sun dedicated his life to revolution to save the country and its people. He had made remarkable contributions in the Chinese history and won high prestige and respect among all Chinese people. Madam Soong Ching-ling started following Dr Sun in youth and was committed to her works in deliberating the Chinese nation and people. She was one of the founders of the People’s Republic of China, Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, a respectful leader among Chinese people, including our fellows in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and overseas. She was a great warrior fighting for patriotism, democracy, internationalism and communism as well as a forerunner in safeguarding world peace. Madam Soong was a brilliant communist member and a renowned woman in the 20th Century. Dr Sun and Madam Soong had a strong historical tie with Hong Kong.

During the period of 1883 to 1911, Dr Sun was educated in Hong Kong, and he also planned, advocated the ideology and raised fund and resources for revolutionary activities in the city. Madam Soong was well-received by the people in Hong Kong when she accompanied Dr Sun to the city in 1920. During the downfall of Guangzhou in 1922, Madam Soong had once evacuated temporarily to Hong Kong. She established the China Defence League in Hong Kong during the war against Japanese invasion to liaise and unite people from overseas and China to promote and rally support for the war, which had made significant contributions to the Chinese victory.  We can now still see the historical trace of the revolutions led by Dr Sun and Madam Soong everywhere in Hong Kong.

Since its establishment in 1982, the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation has been taking a proactive role in promoting exchanges between the mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The Foundation has organised three themed exhibitions featuring Madam Soong and also cultural exchange activities for students in Hong Kong. The China Madam Soong Ching Ling Foundation joined hands with the Hong Kong Rosamond Foundation in organising this exhibition to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Foundation and the 25th Anniversary of the Hong Kong’s Return to the Motherland.
